that the fbi was investigating a case involving the director of the cia. we're keeping them honest as we do every night not to take sides, you can get that on other cable news channels, but to look for the truth, the facts. here's what we know right now about who knew what and when. according to "wall street journal" the fbi discovered the affair between petraeus and his biographer, paula broadwell, in late summer. we'll have more on how in just a moment. so the fbi reportedly knew in late summer that the head of the cia was having an affair, but it wasn't until months later after election day that president obama found out, and the house and senate intelligence committees didn't find out until friday. congressional leaders from both parties are angry, they say they should have been notified sooner that there were potential national security issues. senate intelligence committee chair dianne feinstein said today she is going to investigate why the fbi didn't tell oversight committees about the investigation. >> a decision was made somewhere not to brief us which is atypical. it is very puzz
is investigating a tip that she is the other woman. she is the woman named in that fbi tape. petraeus has not admitted an affair directly with her. but he said, yesterday afternoon, i went to the white house and asked the president to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as d/cia. after being married for over 37 years, i showed extreme poorly judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. this afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation. author of "the secrets skreof t fbi," and suzanne kelly. let's start with suzanne kelly. this is a massive blow, really, to everybody in the white house, to general petraeus, to his wife and to the country. the country has lost one of its great military men in scandalous circumstances. >> you know, piers, that's absolutely right. the first shock was he admitted to having an affair. this is someone with a stellar reputation in washington, very well respected. war hero in many ways who was appointed by president obama
, flirtatious e-mails she allegedly sent general allen. >>> and the latest on the fbi investigation that stumbled upon petraeus' affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. two experts from the fbi on why president obama didn't learn of the investigation for six months. let's go "outfront." >>> i'm erin burnett. good evening. "outfront" tonight, a scandal turns more bizarre. new details tonight on the petraeus scandal. the white house, forced to take a stand. not on david petraeus, but on another four-star general, john allen. america's top commander in afghanistan. he was set to become the nato supreme commander, until the president put that nomination on hold today. like petraeus, allen is at the top of the american military. he's a four-star general. one of only four four-star generals in the entire u.s. marine corps. officials are investigating general john allen after finding allegedly inappropriate e-mails between general allen and jill kelley. the same jill kelley who had contacted the fbi about receiving harassing e-mails from petraeus biographer and former mistress, paula
is taken over the generalship of the cia. >> and, suzanne, we don't know how long the fbi was investigating, do we know if the obama administration knew about this before the election? >> no, but wouldn't we all love to know the answer to that. that really is a burning question. just days after the election, something like this comes out. clearly something like this had been going on for a while. well, it actually meant he was having sex with her under the desk, but the fbi thought it might refer to corruption. in other words, doing something under the table. and that's how this investigation started. the fbi then went back and traced all of his e-mails and ascertained that he was having this affair with this woman, and of course that is a total violation of top secret security rules. you are not supposed to compromise yourself in any way where you could be blackmailed, especially the cia director. there is almost nobody in the government who knows as many secrets as he does, and people are routinely fired for putting themselves in this position when they have a top secret security clearanc
broadwell, uncovered during an fbi investigation. the bureau was looking into so-called jealous e-mails purchase reportedly send by broadwell to kelley, a petraeus family friend. tonight, the "washington post" has reported that as president obama rearranges his national security team, it is considering asking senator john kerry to serve on the team and the fbi agent was barred from taking part in the case for allegedly sending shirtless pictures of himself to a woman involved in the case. meanwhile, the ghost writer of broadwell's book, vernon loeb, says he was clueless about the affair between petraeus and broadwell. here with the latest on the scandal that keeps getting bigger and more bizarre, cnn's pentagon correspondent barbara starr and intelligence correspondent, suzanne kelly. welcome back to you both. >> thank you. >> when we talked on friday night, it was all just breaking and it seemed a relatively straightforward scandal but none of us thought it would stay that way, and sure enough, tonight, a really bizarre twist. it's not john kerry possibly becoming defense secreta
it was handled wrong by the fbi, first of all to have something like this a cyber harassment case rise to the level of an fbi investigation. when it reached the cia director, have the fbi investigate the director of of the cia and the president or the attorney general not be notified of it is a dereliction of duty. the president if he was not told should have been told and that to me was somebody really dropping the ball. the other thing makes the whole thing implausible is you have a four, five, six-month investigation whatever it was. nothing comes out, nothing is disclosed. suddenly on election night the fbi announces the investigation is over and they tell general clapper. the next day the white house finds out about it, the next day general petraeus submits his resignation. friday the president accepts the resignation. we find yesterday the fbi raiding the home of paula broadwell. then we find out general allen has been involved in emails with joe kelley, so you have like four or five different events happening in the last seven days when for the prior five or six months nothing h
't the director of the fbi would tell the president of the united states that he may be compromised. >> new details on the developing store store. an american family living in third world conditions after sandy. it is not even anger now. it is just broken people. people are being brokep. and our nation on the brink of massive tax hike. two leaders going head-to-head over how to deal with our debt and they need to get it done now. >> they are damaging our question. and start to solve the problem. we are serious about reducing the debt. the wealthy east americans stop the americans from going after the cliff. >> there is new reaction to the resignation of the cia. the timing of david petraeus's departure. it is a day after the four-star general ended his career . he quit because he had an extra marital affair and now we know more about the fbi investigation that led to the discovery of the woman he was with. we reported that she is biographer paula broadwell. during that process her name came up. and all of this information coming to light on just days before the hearing on benghazi, libya te
this woman, jill kelley, a married tampa bay socialite, complained to the fbi that she was receiving harassing e-mails from an anonymous sender. she registered the complaint this past summer. the fbi investigated and in the process discovered the sender was paula broadwell. and that also broadwell had an affair with petraeus. the e-mails to kelley stemmed from broadwell's apparent jealousy of kelley's relationship with petraeus. there is no evidence that kelley had an affair with petraeus. the kelley family acknowledged that they were friendly with the petraeus family. by late october, under questioning from the fbi, both petraeus and broadwell had admitted to the affair. on november 6th, election day, the fbi notified the director of national intelligence, james clapper, of the affair. clapper advised petraeus to step down, and within days, petraeus did. question, is there more to this affair than meets the eye? pat buchanan. >> i don't think there's a great deal more than what we already know, john. a lot of people are attacking the fbi for investigating those harassing e-mails run
of defense. >> the fbi found up to 35,000 pages of documents, some dating back two years during the investigation. according to a senior official close to allen, one message the afghan commander sent warned kelly she had been threatened. the official says allen had received an anonymous message, now believed to be from broadwell. the pentagon was called in because allen is subject to military law. but why did this only come out now in public view? >> we have a large amount of alleged material that went between these individuals, as much as 30,000 pages. it's not clear whether this was viewed as a relatively minor question or whether it was not apparent until the very end that the general was involved. >> allen was to appear thursday for senate hearing to become the military head of nato. now that is on hold. >> we need to be careful not to have this cloud of scandal start to color the image of general allen because the minute that happens, it may be almost too late to sustain his leadership. >> wolf, so everybody is talking about 30,000 pages of documents and e-mails. it sounds
. a woman named joe kelly had complained to the fbi with a series of harassing e-mails, they were trailed back to paula broadwell who saw kel as a rival. reports 20,000 e-mails between kelly and john allen. they have been handed over to the pentagon where they are being analyzed. i interviewed general petraeus and general alan several times. paula broadwell joined me for a conversation early this year. joining me from washington d.c., davidic nake a column else for "the washington post" and martha raddatz a senior affairs correspondent with abc news. two cbs colleagues, norah o'donnell my cohost and john miller correspondent at cbs news wh is frequently with me on cbs this morning. i'm please to do have all of them here. we'll be joined by norah and john in just a moment. martha tell me about general petraeus. do you know him. what is it about this story that surprises you most? >> well, i have known general petraeus and covered him in war zones for about a decade and what surprised me most is he seems like a man who is so disciplined and so careful about his image andbout his retation t
from an fbi employee concerned that national security might have been breached as a result of the affair. cantor was told on october 27th. president obama didn't find out about the affair until after election day. congressional leaders from both parties are upset that neither they nor the president were informed until late last week. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security. and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: a u.s. official said there was no breach of security as a result of the affair. a cantor aide says the congressman called the fbi's leadership to report the information he got on october 31st. but according to "the wall street journal," the fbi's probe had already been under way for months. "the journal" says the fbi's investigation began in may when it started looking into e-mails described as threatening sent to a woman cnn has identified as jill kelley, a family friend of petraeus'. the fbi traced the e-mails back to paula broadwell, petraeus' biographer. and by late summer, "the wal
or coverup? >> i have a hard time believing the whole story. first of all how an e-mail matter becomes an fbi matter, how it was investigated so many months and it wasn't until election night the fbi suddenly realized it involved david petraeus? if they were investigating three or four months, that would have been the first thing they found out. then should have brought it to the president's attention so none of it adds up. the challenging thing for gen. petraeus, with his new position he's not allowed to communicate with the press. he's known about it. they have had correspondents with the cia in libya within 24 hours they knew what was happening. >> petraeus wags telling her things. she said there was a failure in the system. she said petraeus knew all of this. but that he wasn't allowed to talk to the press because of his position. she's telling people this. now that's pretty serious, since petraeus did brief congressmen soon appear the a tack in a closeddor session and he doesn't seem to have told them any of this. >> on a personal level his resignation is appropriate. a lot of questions
been through all of the newspaper articles that the fbi has pretty much concluded there was no transfer of classified information from general petraeus to paula broadwell. i'm not convinced we know the full answers to that yet. why then did the fbi spend four hours at paula broadwell's home last night. point number two, how is it general pa contemporaneous and paula broadwell were able to share a private e-mail account where they saved e-mails in draft folders and the other person logged in to that same log in so they could read the same e-mails in the draft folder. it is a common technique used by other people in our own government as well as terrorists use that. it's a way to keep your e-mail off the public server that your company or g mail or yahoo or whoever it is could look at. the other thing that interested me was a nugget inside some of "the washington post" reporting today which is that petraeus told broadwell this summer to stop sending the harassing e-mails to kelly because kelly had told petraeus that she found out where she was getting those e-mails from. that was about th
-- >> the fbi is looking into monticello e-mail. >> thomas jefferson, the randy bugger. >> by the way, heilemann is the national affairs writer for -- >> yes. >> this is going to be a long show. >> by the way -- >> growth industry. >> in the line of booty, "new york daily news." this thing's just getting a little weird. this lady right here gets the fbi to investigate. >> yeah. and what fbi agent does she go to? >> the guy who sent her the shirtless pictures. >> you know who i'm going to go to? i'm going to go first to the guy who sent me shirtless pictures. >> the lewis -- >> this guy sent me a shirtless picture, i'm going to go with him. we get a relationship, i'm sure it's platonic. >> i have no idea, seriously, the connection there, but thank you for -- >> he's classing the place up. >> don't forget she's an identical twin, at some point in this story, i'm sure we'll have a switcharoo. >> okay. >> so she goes to the fbi, and we find out -- threaten her life. threaten her life? no, the e-mails say, i know you were touching general petraeus under the table. >> inappropriately. >> inappropriate
extramarital affair, uncovered as part of an fbi inquiry. >> i was shocked, i was surprised, a little bit in denial. didn't think it was true or even possible. i thought perhaps that, in fact, it had been somebody's attempt to try to bring him down, which has happened in the past. >> several law enforcement officials telling nbc news that the fbi inquiry began as an investigation into harassing and anonymous e-mails sent to a petraeus family friend, a florida woman named jill kelley. the source of those e-mails led them to the author of general's biographer, paula broadwell. correspondence between broadwell and petraeus displayed evidence on an extramarital affair. now leaders of congressional intelligence are demanding to know more about the fbi's scrutiny of the nation's top spy, especially its timing and why they were kept in the dark along with the rest of the nation. >> we received no advance notice. it was like a lightning bolt. the way i found out, i came back to washington thursday night. friday morning, the staff director told me there were a number of calls from pr
>> late last night the fbi drops by the home of paula broadwell, the woma involved in the alleged affair with cia director david petraeus with agents carrying out boxes of material. now the top military commander in afghanistan is being investigated by the pentagon for having inappropriate communications with jill kelley, the woman who first blew the whistle on broadwell's threatening e-mails. oh, boy, here we go. good morning. i'm mika brzezinski, along with joe scarborough, this is "way too early," the show that receives on average about a dozen inappropriate communications from donny deutsch every day. >> every half hour. it's a long story. by the way, shirtless as well. we will talk about that. >> that's on a good day. thanks for being up with us. shoot us an e-mail or tweet u us and let us know why you're awake right now. or do what jill kelley's twin sister does and text the word awake followed by your response to 622639. we'll read the best responses later in the show. >> you kids make sure if your dad sends an e-mail, the shirt stays on. okay? seriously. i'm tired of looki
told is that once someone of the director's stature comes even within the scope of an fbi investigation, not the subject, but the scope, there has to be immediate briefings to the ranking members and the chairman of the house and senate intelligence committees. we are not clear, at least tonight, that that happened. >> greta: all right. when did this affair begin? when the affair is still secret from the time it began until today is a time when someone is potentially blackmail material. do we know when this began -- or not the point it ended, but when it's gone to the public domain. >> we don't have specific information on when the affair began. once the story broke, the cia director was resooning, within the first half hour, several people here at fox got multiple phone call, pointing to this author, paula broadwell and to the thyme frame in afghanistan, when the biography was being written and cia director petraeus was the eye staff commander. we're talking about 2010, 2011, before he took the position at the cia. >> greta: i take it when you go to the cia, especially head of the cent
